Videocard question for you.

Postby MrWright » Tue Apr 20, 2010 6:23 pm

Ok I'm finally building my new PC. What is better, 1 kick ass video card, or 2 ok cards with SLI or crossfire? To he honest I've not bothered to keep up with this, was hoping it would go away by now. I'll post specs when I order the parts. My shoing cart at new egg is loaded 9 Items $2,162.91 Thats without the Videocard. I also want more RAM. Problem is the Motherboard has only 4 slots and the Ram I want comes in a 3 pack.

OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

I'll have to look around to see if I can find a 4 pack or 2 - 2 packs. The Board will handle 16 gigs of ram. Good luck finding 4 - 4 gig sticks.

Well to be honest, I am running 4 gig of ram and a XFX 9800GTX 512 meg card, just about 100.00 now and will play any game i throw at it with decent frame rates. And i have been told by using 2 cards you can do special things with dual cards and dual monitors but as of just playing a game it wont help you much more than running one card frame rate wise, you will see a bit difference but not worth the extra cash for the 2nd card

Agreed. For twice the money you only increase performance by about 50%. Granted , 2 cards is nice and makes it easier for multiple monitors but not necessary.I'm running 2 cards now ,old ones but I couldn't tell a lot of difference when I was using just one.Try getting something with an hdmi port anyways. I bought a 26 inch hi-def last year but my cards don't have an hdmi port. At some point you will upgrade your monitor and an hdmi hookup will be nice to have . Still waiting on the brother in the white house to send me my money so I'll know what I can afford. I hope he hasn't 'redistributed" it already. :(

Thanks guys, thats what I needed to hear. I've decided on a midrange upper end card. It has 1 Gig of ram and 1 HDMI, and 2 DVI ports.

Here is the link. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814500095

I also found a better deal on ram. I'm getting 8 Gigs on 4 sticks. Tell ya what, be sure and read the specs on what the Mother Board will run before you buy. My M.B. will not take anything higher than 1.65V It says it may damage the Processor. Lots of the DDR3 Ram is 1.7V

not that its much help but the on board video chipset can be used for SLI its not a big increase in power but alittle better than none imo

I'm guessing your going to windows 7 64bit
win 7 32bit still only goes to 4gig ram

It is a nice rig. The case is where most of the extra money is in that setup. $800

What I'm building is based on this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

I don't have the mouse or Keyboard, different Vid Card, Only 8 Gig of ram. But I bet mine has a better Cas Latency 7 Timing 7-7-7-24. You have no idea what they are selling you in the packaged set.

Below is links to what I have ordered. Well due to how much you are allowed to spend on a debit card in 1 day. This will all be ordered tomorrow. Some of it is being shipped right now.

Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition Gulftown 3.33GHz 6 x

Intel BOXDX58SO LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Blue RC-932-KKN3-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

COOLMAX CUG-950B 950W ATX12V V.2.2 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Modular Active PFC Power Supply

ZOTAC ZT-285E3LA-FSP GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Getting 2 sets of these. OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

LG WH10LS30K 10X Blu-ray Burner - LightScribe Support

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

My old Nostromo is getting worn out and this is a newer model.BELKIN F8GFPC200 N52TE Tournament Edition

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Then they give you CAPCOM Resident Evil 5 – PC Digital Download when you buy the Intel Core i7-980X.

UGH ! ! ! I was on the phone with Intel Tech Support today. It turns out the New Motherboard I bought doesn't have the correct Bios for the Processor I have. My Processor is to new bla bla bla . . . I had to ship the M.B. to Intel. They are going to send me another M.B. loaded with the proper Bios. Pisses me off because it will take about 1.5 weeks till I get it back.
